Paradigm Developments, a York-based construction company, was tasked with restoring a Grade II listed Georgian coach house. Known for its steep and narrow staircases, the coach house had been largely inaccessible to guests with disabilities. The project’s primary objective was to improve accessibility throughout the building, allowing all visitors, including those with limited mobility, to comfortably navigate both floors while preserving the building’s historical integrity.
To address the coach house’s unique architectural challenges, Paradigm Developments partnered with The Platform Lift Company to design a bespoke accessibility solution. After careful consultation, the Motala 2000 platform lift was selected and installed. This lift is known for its compact design, making it ideal for buildings with restricted space—perfect for the coach house’s low walls and open timber frame roof.
The platform lift was customised to complement the house’s Georgian décor. Featuring black metalwork, oak panelling, and subtle glazing, the lift was designed to blend seamlessly with the building’s traditional aesthetic. This ensured that while accessibility was vastly improved, the historical charm of the property remained intact. The installation adhered to all planning permission requirements and building regulations, with special attention paid to the building’s height and travel restrictions.
The installation of two Motala 2000 platform lifts has significantly improved the coach house’s accessibility, enabling guests with disabilities to easily access the first-floor wings. These lifts are discreetly integrated into the Georgian architecture, maintaining the historical essence of the property while enhancing its functionality. This project is a prime example of how modern solutions can be seamlessly integrated into heritage buildings, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors without compromising the structure’s historic value.
