Tavistock Guildhall required a disability access solution from the Platform Lift Company to overcome a difference in floor height within their Visitor Information Centre.
Tavistock Guildhall, which was repurposed in 1848 to contain a fire station, police station and magistrates’ court, is now a gateway to the Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Victorian building welcomes thousands of tourists looking to explore the area therefore a reliable and durable access solution was essential.
A standard low-rise platform lift was the obvious solution to overcome the small difference in floor height within the Visitor Information Centre. However, the option of having a wheelchair lift and steps wasn’t viable because of limited space. The Platform Lift Company suggested using a FlexStep which transforms from a flight of stairs into a platform lift at the touch of a button.
Because this product can be built in different step widths and step height, it was a perfect fit for the available space. Bespoke features including oak handrails and tread for steps could also be incorporated within the design.

The FlexStep has transformed the Visitor Information Centre into a fully accessible area. By using a careful balance of modern design and a timeless oak finish, the appearance of the platform lift remains sensitive to the historic building.
