St Paul's Cathedral

Sir Christopher Wren forgot about the Equality Act when designing St Pauls Cathedral

For more than 1,400 years, a Cathedral dedicated to St Paul has stood at the highest point in the City of London.

Frequently at the centre of national events, traditions have been observed here and radical new ideas have found expression under the iconic dome. In many cases these events have left some physical record as well as echoes in the intangible memory of the building.

The present Cathedral, the masterpiece of Britain's most famous architect Sir Christopher Wren, is at least the fourth to have stood on the site. It was built between 1675 and 1710, after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London, and services began in 1697.

This was the first Cathedral to be built after the English Reformation in the sixteenth-century, when Henry VIII removed the Church of England from the jurisdiction of the Pope and the Crown took control of the life of the church

1400 years on Alan Baxter Associates Architects was tasked with providing disabled access up 4 risers into the Chapel, but obviously it wasn’t to be a standard installation as we we couldn’t fix directly onto the marble stair treads and it had to blend in with the cathedrals surroundings.

With our specialist experience in historic buildings and working closely with English heritage, we produced some site specific drawings to the historic buildings consultants Pursell Miller Tritton for approval.

We used a round aluminium black anodised rail that doubles up as a hand rail, round dome headed posts which were fixed under the marble slabs and the carriage finished in RAL 9005 (black) and a bit of lift designer flare. It was accepted and we went into manufacture, within 8 weeks The Platform Lift Co engineers were on site chem-fixing in the round domed posts for the rail to be positioned to.

The Platform Lift Company stairiser range can be fitted directly onto the wall or by using free-standing posts that fit into a concrete slab a perfect solution if not vertical transportation can be achieved.

As with all The Platform Lift Companies products the PLC stairiser is covered with 12 months warranty and the peace of mind that The Platform Lift Co Service Division will be there 24/7 if needed.
