Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge is a very famous natural wonder of Britain. The Gorge is the site of the Cheddar Show Caves, where Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, Cheddar Man, estimated to be over 9,000 years old, was found in 1903.

The National Trust & Cheddar Gorge Estates Office contacted The Platform Lift Company as they were planning a project to refurbish the Cheddar Museum of Prehistory.  A full site survey was initially carried out to understand the environment and how the Museum was going to be set up to enable a steady flow of their 500,000 visitors per year.

It would have been impossible to install a lift that would meet with all the regulations in keeping within the prehistoric style of over 9000 years ago, they probably didn’t have too many codes and regulations back in those days!

Our Surveyor who has a wealth of experience from working on similar projects, suggested a contemporary 1m platform lift. Using rolled stainless steel & glazed panels gave the lift a nice balance of a modern feel set in a prehistoric environment. We wanted the users to feel like they want to use the lift not feel like it’s a functional piece of equipment and come away from Cheddar feeling like they have had an all-round great experience.
